CAFE CULTURE

RMIT Assignment

Business Card

The first project based around Coffee Culture was to design a cafe loyalty card. It was intended that we use a local cafe in Brunswick for this task, however I negotiated to use another cafe based in my hometown.

Monsieur Pierre is a french inspired cafe located in the heart of my hometown Kyneton. The gourmet produce haven serves as not only a meeting place for friends or somewhere to grab a on the go coffee and a bite to eat but also provides last minute take home dinners and snacks for hungry locals. The cafe itself is a traditional two story shop building on Mollison St in Kyneton and is referred to as the ‘hip’ styled cafe. Painted cream, red and green architraves i wanted to continue that theme through the design to bring all the elements of the cafe together.

The cafe is particularly popular to people from the ages 15+ so my approach was to keep the design unique and fairly minimal so it was easy to read. Because Monsieur Pierre are best known for their appetising coffee, I thought it was important to create a coffee cup vector for the card to represent their specialties. In addition their cafe name was centred below the logo.

Everyone who receives a loyalty card already knows where the cafe is so it wasn't necessary to put the address or phone number on the card so instead I thought it was important to put all their social media links on the back of the card with the free 10th coffee.

I think my design is effective because of the bright colour red used throughout the design. I toned the redness down with more white objects because it seemed to overpower dark colours.

I did a two spot colour job for my design because I wanted to try something other than a CMYK job. The colours printed really nicely using the Pantone colours and will definitely use this method for future projects.

Poster

The Coffee Culture assignment was to design a poster/pamphlet of some kind. I chose to create a 210mm x 594mm fold up poster. Following my first rationale, It was intended that we use a local cafe in Brunswick for this task, however I negotiated to use another cafe based in my hometown.

Because Monsieur Pierre are not only best known for their appetising coffee but their catering services as well, I thought it was important to create a fold up poster that could fit on their counter to promote their catering. It was intended to be a pamphlet size when folded up so people can easily take it home and stick on their fridge.

I added a chef hat to the logo because I wanted to represent their catering services in a more creative way and I thought by adding the hat it would give the poster that extra character that people could possibly be drawn to.

I wanted to continue their colour scheme of the shop throughout the poster design as I had done with my loyalty card for Monsieur. So I stuck with a nice shade of red that wasn't too in your face, a subtle pink and dark green. I thought exploring other colours for the poster would of ruined their character so I stuck with their main colours and spiced it up by adding an eps of red pencil drawn dots for half of the background. It not only helped to draw your attention away from the bolder colours, it also reminded me of crumbs sitting on a coffee table.

I stuck with a minimum of two different typefaces for the reason that I already had a lot of text on the second page of my poster, I didn't want it to look too over the top or displeasing to the eye. Avenir and Snowboarding were the two typefaces used on the poster. Avenir had been the main slab of text specifically because it had multiple weights to choose from and looked clear and sophisticated. This typeface also suited the logo typeface ‘snowboarding’. Although ‘snowboarding’ wasn’t a true typeface I liked how it spoke “MONSIEUR PIRRE” straight away. The character in the typeface was perfect and I had to choose it for there logo.

My design will be effective to monsieur customers because everyone knows that they are based around the colours red and green… French colours (hence the french inspired food). I thought it was appropriate to continue their ‘look/character’ because once you veer away from what they’re/someone is best known for you seem to loose interest. So I thought it was important to keep that creative, fun and french look to the poster design.
