HOMAGE

RMIT Assignment

Inspiration from the fabulous Jai Vasicek           ahoytrader.com

Jai Vasicek was the artist I chose to base my homage on. Particularly because I like the way he uses traveling as a source of inspiration for his artwork. I not only wanted to learn more about the cultural and formal framework of Jai’s work, I also wanted to expand my knowledge on adjusting and manipulating scanned images in photoshop.

The consistent use of line, colour and texture applied in his artwork provoke a sense of elegance and originality. The bases of his pieces are hand made from his own moulds from a combination of cements, plasters and resins, in which make the tiles and murals so unique.

Although my homage is made on paper, I chose to replicate a concrete look for my posters by adding different splotches of grey onto the piece using a spray paint and watercolour paintbrush effect on photoshop. I also undertook the challenge to paint with gauche, a medium I haven't really explored before. Using the gauche pieces I created fit really nicely onto the main features of my piece and altering the work in photoshop helped to brighten and set the theme of my homage. Adjusting the drawings and tracings of some of jai’s portraits I created with fine liners was also a new avenue I got to venture and I was really pleased with the outcome.

Whilst Jai’s work is only featured on a smaller scale of cements, plasters and resins, the rustic aspect of his artwork reminds a lot of Banky’s graffiti featured on streets, walls and bridges of cities throughout the world. Although jai’s global footprints have inspired his work it’s somewhat similar to Banksy being inspired by political issues around the world. More increasingly, different parts of the world raise different public issues which may bring forward vast interpretation. Whether it may be political, public or personal, we all have something to say and I believe Jai has demonstrated his worldly view on his personal experiences.
